reverse graffiti.
instead of using actual spray cans…some artist are just cleaning dirt off of certain areas to make their masterpieces. and they are calling it reverse graffiti. kind of brilliant.
This is an awesome idea — just might have to try it …

Beautiful portrait of a happy Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is filled with love and optimism not with anger and rage. We need more books filled with this Wonder Woman.
Beautiful.I think it’s okay for Wonder Woman to be angry. When I wrote her, I tried to show her compassion, even in fury. But I had a secret key in my brain…she’s never angry on her own behalf. Slap her in the face, she will laugh at you. Harm an innocent, she will make you regret the day you came out of the womb.
That works for me. When I write the selfless heroes, Superman, Wonder Woman, and my own view of Batman, I don’t like to see them fight for selfish reasons. When I wish the world had superheroes, it’s not for them to fight pointlessly and bicker endlessly. It’s not to stop bank robberies.
It’s to fight things that are unjust, to stand up for people who are being bullied and victimized.
In that case, I think it’s okay for her to knock someone down. What makes Diana different is that she immediately extends her hand to help them back up. That is the KEY of why I love her so much.

NPR* has just officially released The Making of Son Lux’s ‘We Are Rising’ Artwork video on their All Songs Considered page. As I mentioned before we did the entire project in 28 hours (actually a little under) and this video shows the whole process: buying the fireworks, building the set, the photo shoot, and then the full time-lapsed design and layout process, complete with Skype video-chats with Ryan in New York.
It was shot and edited by Michael Chiarelli, who’s one of my favorite editors, and we are so happy with it. It was such a fun, elaborate, and beautiful process. Hope you enjoy this little glimpse behind the scenes.
It’s worth watching full-screen, and—not to be presumptuous—but if you’ve got some headphones nearby, why not put those on as well :)

*I’ve gotta say that being featured on NPR has actually been a life-long dream. Some people might want their work in Rolling Stone or something like that, but for me, it’s always been NPR.
Instantly pre-ordered.
… instant waiting? But not for too long! Excitement!
Just. Love this.

“Smile”, Performed by Janelle Monáe
Composed by Charles Chaplin
Lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons
Happy Birthday, Charlie.
I made a post recently (sort of) about my kind of crazy love of Chaplin films. Strangely, I didn’t actually see one until I was in college, and one of the first film courses I took (back before I’d come close to settling on a major) had a screening of “The Gold Rush”. I think I’ll always remember the first time I saw it, and how surprised I was by how much I enjoyed it.
I have a tendency to either be completely disengaged with a film or to have really physical reactions, and this was certainly the latter. I felt like I pretty literally had stars in my eyes. From the very first moment Charlie totters precariously along the ridge, I really don’t know how to not smile.

And for all of the endlessly delightful moments from his films, the constant theme is enduring and laughing through hardship and sorrow. So here is possibly my favorite rendition of this song, by the amazing Janelle Monáe, paired with the final shot from “Modern Times” (which if I’m remembering right was originally scored with Chaplin’s instrumental version). Both Chaplin’s films and Monáe’s music are things I turn to for cheer and inspiration, and Monáe really does perform this beautifully.
